NYC Restricts AI Use for Students Below High School

New York City has introduced a one-year restriction on the use of generative artificial intelligence by students from pre-school through eighth grade within the city’s public schools. This policy aims to prevent younger students from becoming overly dependent on AI tools, such as chatbots and AI tutors, which could weaken their ability to think independently.

Education officials cite concerns that reliance on AI may hinder the development of essential skills like reading, writing, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication. Additionally, there are worries about academic integrity, as generative AI can quickly produce essays and answers, potentially encouraging students to bypass the learning process.

The city emphasizes the importance of human interaction in education and aims for students to learn directly from teachers and peers. High school students will receive lessons in AI literacy, covering how the technology works and its risks, while a limited number of supervised AI programs will be allowed.

The policy will be evaluated during the 2026–2027 school year.
