NFF Denies Nigeria's World Cup Elimination Reports

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has refuted media reports claiming that Nigeria has been eliminated from World Cup qualification, asserting that FIFA has not yet made a ruling on the ongoing dispute involving the DR Congo national football team. Ademola Olajire, NFF's Director of Communications, clarified that the reports stem from outdated FIFA communications and not a new decision.

The controversy dates back to November 2025, when DR Congo defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the CAF playoff final, securing a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs. Nigeria lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe.

NFF General Secretary Moham Sanusi outlined the federation's stance, noting that the DR Congo Football Federation has rejected Nigeria's claims. FIFA has acknowledged the complaint and is currently reviewing the matter, but no timeline for a decision has been provided.

The inter-confederation playoffs are scheduled for March 26-31 in Mexico, with Nigeria eager to avoid missing a second consecutive World Cup.
