FIFA Delays Verdict on Nigeria's Petition Against DR Congo

FIFA has not yet issued a verdict on Nigeria's petition against DR Congo concerning the eligibility of players with dual nationality in the African playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed the petition on December 15, 2025, after Nigeria's Super Eagles lost to DR Congo in a penalty shootout (4-3) in Rabat, Morocco.

The NFF claims that DR Congo fielded players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, who hold dual nationality and were allegedly cleared improperly. The NFF insists that this irregular process led to the clearance of these players, which violates FIFA regulations.

The verdict is expected to be announced on February 16, 2025, during a scheduled meeting of FIFA's ethics committee. Although there is no scheduled meeting of FIFA's executive council this week, a possible emergency meeting may be called.

NFF's director of communication, Dr. Ademola Olajire, has dismissed claims of any decision being made by FIFA at this time.
