Nigerian Guild of Editors Condemns Journalist Intimidation

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has raised alarms regarding the ongoing harassment, intimidation, and prosecution of journalists by security agencies, stating these actions could jeopardize press freedom and legitimate journalism. In a communiqué signed by President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild emphasized the need for the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create a fair environment for all political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NGE specifically criticized the misuse of cybercrime laws to restrict journalism and urged all levels of government and the public to respect press freedom. They recommended that grievances be directed to the Media Ombudsman, established by several media organizations.

Furthermore, the Guild called on the government to facilitate a conducive environment for political campaigning and to ensure equitable treatment of all parties. They also stressed the importance of maintaining high professional standards in media reporting.
