NUJ Demands Investigation into Attack on Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has urged authorities to investigate an attack on 10 journalists, all members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ. The incident occurred while the journalists were en route to cover Chief Ifeanyi Nworie's defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikwuato Idembia.

This call for accountability was made in a communiqué following an emergency meeting held at the Dr Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki. The NUJ emphasized the necessity of ensuring the safety of journalists, which is crucial for democracy.

The union has requested that the state government and security agencies take action to bring the attackers to justice. Additionally, it has urged political parties to advise their members against harassing journalists as political activities ramp up in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

The NUJ plans to formally communicate with Governor Francis Nwifuru, security agencies, political parties, and the Nigerian Bar Association regarding this incident and other safety concerns.
