NGE Warns of Press Freedom Violations Ahead of Elections

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed alarm regarding the rising violations of press freedom, including harassment, intimidation, and prosecution of journalists by security agencies. This concern was articulated in a communiqué following the NGE Standing Committee meeting held in Kano on September 11, 2026, signed by President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh.

The Guild criticized the misuse of cybercrime legislation against journalists, asserting that press freedom is essential for democracy and good governance. They urged governments and the public to respect this freedom and suggested that grievances against media reports should be addressed through established channels, such as the Media Ombudsman, rather than through intimidation.

Additionally, the NGE called for a conducive environment for the 2027 general election, emphasizing the need for fair campaigning conditions for all political parties and candidates, including the lawful display of party symbols and campaign slogans.
