Investigate Threats Against Journalist Seun Okinbaloye

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have called on President Bola Tinubu to investigate threats made against journalist Seun Okinbaloye by Minister Nyesom Wike. This request follows Wike's comments during a media chat in Abuja, where he reacted to Okinbaloye's concerns regarding the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The groups condemned Wike's remarks, stating they pose a significant threat to press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria. They highlighted that Okinbaloye, like all journalists, is entitled to exercise his right to freedom of expression.

The organizations stressed the urgent need for the government to ensure the safety and security of journalists, warning that the increasing intimidation and harassment undermine democratic accountability. They also noted Nigeria's declining position in the World Press Freedom Index, emphasizing the critical need for protective measures for journalists.
