Wike Faces Probe Demands Over Threat to Journalist

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have called for an immediate investigation into remarks made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which allegedly threatened journalist Seun Okinbaloye during a media chat in Abuja. The organizations expressed deep concern over the implications of Wike's comments for press freedom, emphasizing that such threats contribute to a hostile environment for journalists in Nigeria.

They highlighted the need for the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to take swift action to ensure the safety of journalists and uphold democratic principles. The joint statement, signed by NGE President Ez Anaba and others, noted the increasing intimidation and harassment of journalists, which undermines media freedom.

They also referenced a decline in Nigeria's position on the World Press Freedom Index, stressing the urgent need to address the growing threats against journalists.
