NUJ Condemns Wike's Threats Against Journalist Seun Okinbaloye

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned remarks made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), against Channels TV journalist Seun Okinbaloye. During a recent media chat, Wike's comments were described as reckless and a threat to press freedom in Nigeria.

The NUJ, through its President Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, stated that such remarks are unacceptable and represent an attempt to intimidate journalists, undermining democratic principles. The union expressed concern over the absence of a clarification or apology from Wike, interpreting this silence as a deliberate act that could foster a climate of fear among journalists.

The NUJ called for an immediate and unreserved apology from the FCT Minister and urged the federal government to publicly condemn Wike's comments. The organization emphasized the need for solidarity among media institutions and civil society groups to protect press freedom and ensure the safety and security of journalists, which are fundamental to a healthy democracy.
