The Nigerian Exchange closed at 218,113.84 points on April 20, 2026, with a mixed performance as five stocks gained up to 10% while an equal number fell sharply. Trading activity remained robust with ₦50.77 billion in turnover across nearly 1 billion shares, though the top losers including STANBIC (-₦18.85) and TRANSPOWER (-₦30.20) weighed heavily on sentiment.

The NGX delivered a tale of two markets on Monday, April 20, with bullish movers unable to offset significant selling pressure in heavyweight stocks.

Five stocks claimed the gainers' podium with identical or near-identical 10% advances. NAHCO and UNIONDICON led the charge, each climbing precisely 10% to ₦242.00 and ₦18.15 respectively, while FIDELITYBK (+9.98%), TRANSEXPR (+9.92%), and ACCESSCORP (+9.87%) followed closely. ACCESSCORP's strength was particularly noteworthy, trading 91.6 million shares—the session's most actively traded stock—suggesting institutional accumulation beneath its ₦32.85 close.

However, the losses painted a grimmer picture. STANBIC's ₦18.85 decline to ₦169.70 and TRANSPOWER's ₦30.20 drop to ₦272.70 represented substantial value destruction in the financial and energy sectors. LIVINGTRUST and STANBIC both surrendered exactly 10% in value, a precision suggesting coordinated portfolio rebalancing rather than organic selling. ABBEYBDS (-9.88%) and GUINEAINS (-8.80%) extended the downside.

Trading volume of 983.9 million shares and ₦50.77 billion in value indicated sustained participation, yet the composition was telling: ACCESSCORP, FIRSTHOLDCO, and ZENITHBANK dominated activity, suggesting retail and institutional players rotated capital toward liquid large-caps while exiting financials and utilities.

Market capitalisation settled at ₦140.44 trillion, barely stable despite the divergent price action. The broad pullback in premium banking stocks warrants close monitoring into the next session.
