The Nigerian Exchange closed lower on Monday as the All-Share Index shed 1.06% to settle at 245,373.56 points, driven by significant losses in bond proxies and consumer staples. Despite the headline decline, selective buying in equities and strong trading activity across blue-chip stocks kept total deal volume robust at 288.9 million shares worth ₦15.2 billion.

The NGX painted a tale of two markets on Monday, 19 October 2026. While the All-Share Index retreated 1.06% to close at 245,373.56 points, the session revealed distinct bifurcation between distressed bond instruments and equity strength in core holdings.

The steepest losses came from government bond proxies, with FGSUK2033S6 plummeting 10.74% (down ₦10.84 to ₦90.15) and FGSUK2027S3 performing contrary to the broader bond weakness by surging 13.77% (up ₦11.43 to ₦94.43). This divergence suggests fixed income investors repositioned holdings, likely responding to yield curve shifts or portfolio rebalancing pressures.

Equity weakness centered on consumer discretionary names. Vitafoam led declines among operationals, dropping 10.00% (down ₦19.40 to ₦174.60), while Cutix fell 9.79% (down ₦0.23 to ₦2.12). Conversely, selective rallies appeared in mid-cap stocks: Austinlaz gained 9.93% (up ₦0.29 to ₦3.21) and Neimeth advanced 7.19% (up ₦0.55 to ₦8.20), signaling rotational flows into undervalued equities.

Trading remained healthy despite negative sentiment. Honyflour dominated volume with 22.2 million shares traded, while banking stocks Accesscorp, Gtco, and Zenithbank combined for over 45 million shares, indicating sustained institutional participation.

Market cap declined to ₦159.3 trillion, reflecting the ASI contraction. The mixed price action and robust volume suggest market participants are selectively positioning ahead of anticipated economic data releases.

Investors should monitor whether tomorrow's session sustains the equity rotation or returns to broader risk-off positioning.
