NHRC Reviews Strategic Plan to Address Human Rights Gaps

On Friday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) initiated a comprehensive review of its 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, recognizing both progress in human rights protection across Nigeria and ongoing challenges such as implementation gaps, weak monitoring systems, and limited institutional capacity. During a consultative stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu (SAN) described the mid-term assessment as a pivotal moment for the commission to evaluate its performance and address challenges.

Ojukwu stated that the review aims to enhance access to justice, accountability, and protection for vulnerable groups. He highlighted that the Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap for strengthening the NHRC's capabilities.

The review revealed institutional commitment but also identified urgent areas for improvement, including the need for better implementation mechanisms and resource utilization. Ojukwu urged stakeholders to contribute to the consultation to enrich the review findings and guide future actions, emphasizing the importance of addressing identified shortcomings to ensure measurable results for citizens.
