NHRC Warns Against Hate Speech Ahead of 2027 Elections

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a warning regarding hate speech, threats, and divisive comments as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. At a press conference in Abuja, Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu highlighted the potential dangers of inflammatory statements from public figures, including Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir and Senator Francis Fadahunsi, which could exacerbate divisions and tensions.

Ojukwu stressed that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it should not be misused to incite violence or hatred. He clarified that the NHRC's intervention is not aimed at any specific political party, religious group, or individual, but rather seeks to uphold human dignity and promote peaceful, credible elections.

Ojukwu urged the government, political parties, and community leaders to foster tolerance and respect, while also calling on security agencies to act against credible threats. The NHRC plans to monitor developments and engage stakeholders throughout the electoral period to safeguard democratic processes.
