NiDCOM Confirms Release of Detained Nigerian Girls

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) announced the release of Nigerian girls who were detained overseas and are currently traveling back to Nairobi. This confirmation followed public outrage after a viral video showed the young women in detention, prompting calls for government intervention.

An Instagram user, #Queenbethia, shared the footage on Sunday, highlighting the girls' plight at Mauritius airport since July 31, 2026. NiDCOM, in a statement issued by its Digital Media Unit, confirmed the girls' freedom and their journey back to Nairobi.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, is collaborating with Nigeria’s diplomatic mission to address the incident with the relevant authorities.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad but did not disclose the girls' identities or the circumstances of their detention. Authorities in Mauritius had not provided an official explanation regarding the incident or the reasons for the girls' prolonged detention.
