NiDCOM Responds to Nigerians Detained in India

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) addressed public concerns regarding Nigerians detained at a deportation camp in New Delhi, India. Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated that some detainees, including a man named Ekene, failed to take advantage of an amnesty program offered by Indian authorities from May 1, 2025, which allowed undocumented Nigerian migrants to regularize their status or leave the country.

This program was extended for three months due to negotiations by Nigeria’s High Commissioner, resulting in over 4,000 Nigerians returning home without penalties. NiDCOM indicated that Ekene and others were arrested after not regularizing their status during the amnesty period.

Journalist Rufai Oseni criticized NiDCOM for its delayed response and claimed that neither the commission nor the Nigerian mission had contacted Ekene, who reported that over 200 Nigerians were detained under harsh conditions. NiDCOM stated that deportation arrangements are managed by Indian authorities and that they are advocating for a new extension of the amnesty program.
