NiDCOM Defends Claims on Nigerian Detained in India

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) defended its statements concerning Ekene Vitus Chukwuma, a Nigerian detained in India for visa overstay. NiDCOM asserted that Chukwuma's Nigerian passport expired in 2020 and that he was arrested in December 2025 for remaining in India without valid documentation.

The commission responded to a report where Chukwuma disputed their account, including claims about his family returning to Nigeria while he stayed in India for business. NiDCOM emphasized that Chukwuma's immigration status was critical in assessing his situation, stating that staying in another country without valid documents constitutes visa overstay, which is an offense.

They criticized the media for presenting him as a victim without acknowledging his immigration violations. NiDCOM urged Nigerians abroad to comply with host country laws and promote regular migration, stating that irregular stay harms the image of law-abiding Nigerians.
