NIDCOM Condemns Mozambique for Deporting 40 Nigerians

The Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has expressed outrage following the deportation of 40 Nigerians from Mozambique. Over a week, 42 Nigerians were reportedly arrested and detained, with the deportation occurring in three batches between March 24 and March 27.

NIDCOM described the process as a violation of fundamental human rights, noting that many of those deported possessed valid documentation. Mozambican authorities cited immigration issues as the reason for the deportations, which NIDCOM officials contested.

Additionally, it was reported that valuables were not returned upon deportation, and significant sums were withdrawn from mobile applications during detention. NIDCOM's spokesperson criticized the lack of notification to the Nigerian embassy during the arrests, which hindered intervention efforts.

Two Nigerians, who are married to Mozambican citizens, remain in Mozambique due to special circumstances. NIDCOM's chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and assured that the Nigerian High Commission is investigating the matter.
