Nigel Farage Resigns to Contest Clacton By-Election

Nigel Farage, leader of the populist right-wing Reform UK party, announced his resignation from Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea on his YouTube channel on Tuesday, intending to force a by-election in which he will run again. This decision comes amid controversy surrounding financial donations and an investigation by Parliament’s standards watchdog regarding his personal wealth.

Farage denied any wrongdoing, asserting he has not broken any laws and has adhered to parliamentary rules. Recent allegations include failing to disclose gifts from British businessman George Cottrell, who has a criminal history, and a £5 million gift from billionaire Christopher Harborne prior to his announcement to stand for Parliament in the 2024 general election.

Farage described the gift from Harborne as “the equivalent of a lottery win.” The investigation into his financial affairs will be suspended until the by-election, with the standards commissioner to decide on its resumption if he loses.
