FG, NASS Support NERC's New Electricity Audit Guidelines

The Federal Government (FG) and the National Assembly (NASS) have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring seamless collaboration between federal and state electricity regulators in Nigeria. This commitment was made during a workshop in Abuja, where the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) introduced new guidelines for technical audits of the national transmission network.

The guidelines, which took effect on July 20, 2026, aim to establish a transparent and standardized framework for conducting periodic technical audits of Nigeria's transmission system. Mr.

Rilwan Lanr Babalola, the chairman of the presidential task force on power sector reform, emphasized the importance of a unified electricity market. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, supported the legal framework enabling federal and state regulators to perform complementary functions.

NERC's guidelines require the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to engage qualified consultants for comprehensive audits of the 330kV and 132kV transmission networks at least once every five years.
