Niger State Medics Reject Rural Postings, Face Consequences

In Niger State, over 70% of medical doctors and health workers have declined postings to rural areas following their employment. Dr Murtala Bagana, the Commissioner of Health, announced this during a one-day orientation for the absorption of 396 Gavi-Supported Staff into the Niger State Civil Service.

He stated that the government will not accept any excuses for reposting requests from health workers, highlighting issues of mal-distribution in healthcare personnel. Bagana warned that health workers could face queries or termination for misconduct, as there are many individuals ready to take their positions.

He assured that the state government would provide necessary equipment and a conducive work environment. Dr Junaidu Inuwa, Executive Director of the Niger State Primary Health Care Development Agency, mentioned plans to recruit more ad-hoc workers and noted that Governor Umaru Bago had previously recruited 100 health workers, with ongoing efforts to address workforce shortages in primary health care facilities.
