Niger State Panel Calls for Prosecution Over Detainee Deaths

Niger State Panel Calls for Prosecution Over Detainee Deaths

An independent investigative committee, established by the Federal Government, has recommended the prosecution of officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) responsible for the deaths of detainees in Niger State. The committee's findings, presented to Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo by chairman Jonathan Kure, highlighted that the incident, which occurred between September 16 and 17, 2026, was a preventable custodial tragedy caused by severe overcrowding, poor ventilation, and neglect of detainee distress calls.

The committee authenticated 33 deaths, including 14 minors, and identified 41 survivors. Medical evidence indicated that fatalities resulted from environmental asphyxia due to prolonged confinement in overcrowded cells, not a disease outbreak.

The committee recommended N1.4 billion in compensation for bereaved families and survivors, as well as the summary dismissal of responsible officers. The investigation involved interviews with NSCDC personnel, survivors, and a review of various records.
