Nigeria's Housing Minister Calls for Sector Regulation

On July 28, 2026, Engr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, addressed stakeholders in Abuja during a workshop on the National Housing Data Programme Report and the Regulation of the Built Environment in the Housing Sector.

He emphasized the need for regulation in the housing sector to combat fraud and the housing deficit, noting that the sector significantly contributes to Nigeria's GDP. Darma reported that since 1974, Nigeria has experienced over 650 building collapses resulting in more than 1,600 deaths, attributing these tragedies to insufficient regulation.

He compared Nigeria's situation to Dubai, which has successfully regulated its housing sector, leading to substantial economic growth. He highlighted that real estate services account for approximately 13.4% of Nigeria's GDP, yet the country lacks adequate protection for ordinary citizens in this sector.

Darma pointed out that the National Housing Fund collects substantial contributions but results in very few mortgages, indicating a severe housing finance issue.
