Nigeria and African Union Strengthen Partnership for Development

On 27 July 2026, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conducted a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the African Union, advancing institutional reforms, and promoting regional peace and stability. Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended the Chairperson for his leadership and expressed Nigeria's support for the African Union's Agenda 2063.

She requested the issuance of a corrigendum regarding Nigeria's permanent membership in the African Monetary Institute (AMI) and appreciated the appointment of qualified Nigerians within the African Union. In response, Youssouf assured that the issues raised would be addressed according to the AUC's recruitment procedures.

He acknowledged Nigeria's significant contributions to the African Union and called for continued Nigerian leadership in regional diplomatic efforts. The meeting also reviewed political developments in Africa, emphasizing the need for dialogue and collective responses to challenges while discussing long-term development priorities.
