Nigeria and EU Strengthen Strategic Partnership in Abuja

On July 23, 2026, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, met with Mr. Gautier Mignot, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the Nigeria-European Union Strategic Partnership through political dialogue, economic cooperation, security collaboration, and sustainable development. The meeting reviewed the state of Nigeria-EU relations and assessed progress since the Second Nigeria-EU Ministerial Dialogue in March 2026.

Ambassador Mignot confirmed ongoing consultations for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's official visit to Brussels, with October 2026 as a potential timeframe. He announced a €20 million support package under the European Peace Facility to bolster Nigeria's counter-terrorism efforts and a forthcoming €25 million peace and stabilisation programme for Nigeria's North-West.

Additionally, discussions included the Nigeria-EU Readmission Agreement and a Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Agreement, which aims to enhance research collaboration.
