Nigeria and Japan Strengthen Bilateral Relations

On July 3, 2026, Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiy, met with Mr. Shin Honda, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of Japan, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.

This meeting provided an opportunity for both countries to review the current state of Nigeria-Japan relations and reaffirm their commitment to enhancing political dialogue, expanding economic cooperation, and promoting trade and investment. Ambassador Enikanolaiy praised Japan as a valuable development partner for Nigeria, commending Japan's achievements in industrial technology and heavy industry.

He expressed Nigeria's commitment to attracting greater Japanese investment in key sectors of the economy. Mr.

Shin Honda reaffirmed Japan's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Nigeria, enhancing political consultations, increasing trade and investment, and continuing development cooperation. The two sides agreed to sustain regular consultations to advance mutual benefits and discussed a forthcoming special policy dialogue scheduled for Abuja in August 2026, which will include a proposed visit by Nigerian business leader Alhaji Aliko Dangote to Japan later in the year.
