Nigeria Customs Service Leads Border Modernization Efforts

Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Cameroon are collaborating to modernize their shared border corridors and integrate their Customs systems as part of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), alongside the Customs administrations of Benin and Cameroon and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), is leading this effort.
A key component of the initiative is the proposed Customs Declaration Exchange System (CDES), which aims to facilitate secure information exchange among the countries' Customs platforms. Discussions intensified during a meeting at Afreximbank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, on October 12, following a benchmarking mission to the Beitbridge Border Post in Zimbabwe.
The meeting, led by Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, focused on establishing an integrated regional border-modernization program to ease the movement of legitimate goods. The program will require investments in infrastructure, including cargo scanners and access roads, and aims to improve digital integration and harmonize Customs procedures.
