Nigeria and West African Nations Strengthen Border Cooperation

Nigeria, through the National Boundary Commission, participated in the Third Meeting of Heads of National Boundary Commissions from October 6 to 8, 2026, in Banjul, The Gambia. The meeting included representatives from Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, alongside the ECOWAS Commission and partners like the German Development Agency.
Nigeria was represented by the Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, Adamu Audu Adaji. The meeting aimed to accelerate boundary operations, strengthen border security, and promote cross-border cooperation and development.
Participants reviewed recommendations from the previous meeting in Cotonou, Benin, in August 2025, and stressed the importance of political commitment, technical collaboration, and dialogue. They called for bilateral agreements to define objectives and requirements for boundary operations and emphasized the need for community engagement to resolve disputes and promote coexistence.
The establishment of a cross-border cooperation fund was also proposed for further examination.
