Nigeria and Burundi Strengthen Military Ties Against Terrorism

The Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening military cooperation with the Republic of Burundi to combat terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational security threats across Africa. This assurance was made during a courtesy visit from Burundi’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Edouard Nduwimana, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Shaibu described Nigeria and Burundi as long-standing partners united by shared African values and a commitment to peace and security. He emphasized the importance of expanding military cooperation through training opportunities, personnel exchanges, and strategic visits.

The Army chief commended Burundi for its progress in promoting peace and stability. Ambassador Nduwimana conveyed goodwill from Burundi’s President, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, and praised the Nigerian Army’s professionalism in regional peace efforts.

He called for greater access for Burundian military personnel to Nigerian military institutions and advocated for expanded joint military exercises and closer collaboration in counter-terrorism.
