Nigeria Advocates for Enhanced Gender Accountability Systems

Nigeria has urged for stronger accountability systems to bridge the gap between gender equality commitments and their implementation. This call was made by Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, during the official launch of the Gender Accountability Framework and the 2025 Annual Report on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The Minister, represented by Princess Jummai Idonije, Chairman of the Board of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, highlighted the need for measurable policies and adequate funding to achieve tangible results for women and girls. She noted that the commitment to gender equality is being translated into programs under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including the Affirmative Procurement Policy and the National Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy 2023–2028.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized the importance of effective measurement in policies and called for gender-responsive accountability mechanisms to ensure resources reach their intended beneficiaries. Nigeria expressed readiness to deepen regional cooperation in gender equality efforts.
