FG and Gates Foundation Enhance Adolescent Health Initiatives

At the 2026 Gender and Inclusion Summit held in Abuja, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to dismantling harmful gender norms and strengthening adolescent health systems. He called for policies and funding that yield tangible results for young Nigerians, noting that cultural expectations often limit adolescents' choices and expose them to violence and poor health outcomes.

Salako mentioned ongoing efforts by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, including the institutionalization of adolescent health programs and a dedicated budget line for adolescent health. He highlighted the National Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy 2025-2030, which aims to expand access to family planning and STI/HIV services.

Ekenem Isichei, Deputy Director at the Gates Foundation Nigeria, emphasized the importance of measuring innovation by its impact on the last mile, advocating for increased investment in primary healthcare and community ownership to reduce maternal mortality and improve adolescent health services.
