Nigeria Joins IAEA Board to Enhance Nuclear Governance

Nigeria has been elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a development the Federal Government views as an opportunity to strengthen its participation in global nuclear governance and advance its interests in the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology. The Federal Government commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to the IAEA, Amb. Fatima Florence Ajimobi, and the Nigerian Embassy in Vienna for their roles in this achievement.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, stated that Nigeria’s election reflects its commitment to the IAEA’s “Atoms for Peace and Development” mandate. This position will allow Nigeria to contribute to international cooperation aimed at enhancing global nuclear governance while promoting its nuclear priorities.

The IAEA, established on July 29, 1957, serves as the central intergovernmental forum for nuclear scientific and technical cooperation. Nigeria has been a member since 1964 and currently cooperates with the IAEA under the Country Programme Framework for 2024–2029, focusing on five priority areas.
