Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear Disarmament at UN

At the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session of the United Nations in New York, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to global efforts aimed at eliminating nuclear-weapon testing. Ibrahim clarified that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons and has never pursued a nuclear weapons program.

He highlighted the call from the Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration for a review of Article 2(7) of the UN Charter, which addresses non-intervention in the internal affairs of states. Ibrahim noted that the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission is a key institution overseeing the country’s nuclear-related activities.

He stated that Nigeria collaborates with various countries, including Russia, China, France, South Korea, and the United States, to strengthen international partnerships aimed at eliminating nuclear-weapon testing, as directed by President Bola Tinubu.
