Nigeria Backs AU Reforms on Peace and Security Initiatives

During the 39th ordinary session of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Nigeria endorsed reforms aimed at enhancing peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent. President Bola Tinubu's position was presented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who highlighted the need for countries to align their restructuring efforts to boost domestic resource mobilization for development financing.

Shettima commended the African Union Peace and Security Council for endorsing a combined maritime task force for the Gulf of Guinea and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to host the task force headquarters, providing necessary infrastructure, including office facilities and temporary staff. He also called for renewed action on democracy in Africa, supporting reforms to strengthen institutions and address unconstitutional changes in governance.

Additionally, Shettima backed the African Union's decision to lift the suspension of Gabon and Guinea and stressed the importance of coordinating policies to promote local processing of Africa's mineral resources.
