Nigeria, EU Enhance Strategic Alliance with New Investments

Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have reinforced their strategic alliance with new investments and cooperation in security and climate action, as announced after the eighth Nigeria-EU ministerial dialogue held in Abuja. The meeting was co-chaired by Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

A joint communiqué emphasized the importance of consolidating long-standing relations based on friendship and mutual respect, particularly amid global geopolitical uncertainties. The parties reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation to deliver tangible benefits to citizens and contribute to a stable and prosperous international order.

They discussed Nigeria's leadership role in promoting democracy and peace in West Africa, addressing regional security challenges, and enhancing investments in renewable energy. The EU committed €73 million in grants for projects, including digital infrastructure and healthcare, and €555 million in loans from the European Investment Bank to support small and medium enterprises.

The 10th Nigeria-EU Business Forum is scheduled for June 25, 2026, in Lagos.
