Nigeria and Ethiopia Sign Agreement for Prisoner Transfer

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu and Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi, signed an agreement with the Ethiopian Government to facilitate the transfer of 100 Nigerian prisoners from Kaliti Prison and Aba Samuel Prison in Ethiopia back to Nigeria. This agreement, signed on a Wednesday, reflects the commitment of President Bola Tinubu's administration to the welfare and protection of Nigerians abroad.

The deal is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safe return of Nigerian citizens who are currently serving sentences in Ethiopian prisons, which have been reported to have poor conditions, including overcrowding and inadequate medical care. The agreement is rooted in principles of human rights and justice, encouraging citizens to respect the laws of host countries.

The Nigerian government aims to secure the repatriation of nearly 300 citizens serving sentences in Ethiopia due to worsening conditions in these facilities.
