Nigeria, Ethiopia Sign Agreement for Prisoner Transfer

On a recent date, Nigeria and Ethiopia finalized an agreement allowing the transfer of over 100 Nigerian prisoners currently serving their sentences in Ethiopian prisons back to Nigeria. The agreement was concluded during a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa, involving Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.

This humanitarian initiative aims to protect the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad and is expected to facilitate the completion of their prison terms in Nigeria. The deal follows extensive diplomatic engagement and legal consultations between the two nations.

Odumegwu Ojukwu emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent further loss of life among Nigerian inmates. The agreement reflects the Tinubu administration's commitment to safeguarding the lives of Nigerians abroad and is anticipated to strengthen legal and diplomatic cooperation between Nigeria and Ethiopia.

Reports indicate that while 100 inmates are covered under this immediate arrangement, nearly 300 Nigerians are serving various sentences in Ethiopia.
