Nigeria Football Faces Crisis, Urgent Reforms Needed

Nigeria's football is experiencing significant setbacks, with the Super Eagles failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons missing the 2027 Women’s World Cup, marking the first absence since the tournament's inception in 1991. Additionally, the Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles have struggled at the junior level, indicating a broader systemic issue rather than isolated failures.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must evolve from merely organizing national-team activities to implementing a comprehensive football development blueprint. This blueprint should encompass grassroots football, youth development, coaching, refereeing, women's football, sports science, player welfare, and domestic leagues.

A clear pathway from junior teams to senior national teams is essential, with a unified technical philosophy and proper monitoring to ensure sustained success. The current reliance on individual talent without structured development is insufficient, as demonstrated by the successes of other African nations in football.
