Nigeria Ready for E-Transmission of Election Results

Shehu Mahdi, a public affairs analyst, stated on Friday during an interview with Arise Television that Nigeria is fully equipped for the electronic transmission of election results. His remarks came in the context of ongoing national debates about the necessity of real-time transmission of election results.

This discussion follows the Senate's amendment on Tuesday to Section 60 of the Electoral Act, which permits the viewing of presidential poll unit results through the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) IReV portal. Mahdi criticized the Senate for potentially hindering the progress of live result transmission, suggesting that such actions could harm Nigeria's democracy and international image.

He argued that the country has the necessary resources, manpower, financial capacity, and infrastructure to facilitate live result transmission, pointing out that the federal executive council and national assembly have successfully conducted meetings via Zoom, indicating readiness for modern communication methods.
