Nigerian Governors Criticized Over Limited Impact of FAAC Windfall Allocations

Nigerian state governors are under scrutiny for their handling of the estimated N9 trillion received through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in 2025. Despite a substantial increase in FAAC allocations to states, critics argue that the funds have not translated into significant improvements in citizen welfare.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society organizations highlight poor fund management and call for greater accountability. Data from FAAC shows a rise in state allocations from N5.186 trillion in 2024 to N7.315 trillion in 2025, with a significant portion of state revenues still reliant on FAAC disbursements.

Concerns are raised over the decline in states' internally generated revenue (IGR) as a proportion of total revenue, indicating a continued dependence on federal transfers. While some states receive praise for specific projects, others face criticism for neglecting infrastructure and essential services despite increased funding.

Analysts emphasize the need for transparency, accountability, and reforms to ensure that FAAC windfalls lead to tangible development outcomes.
