Nigeria Has 90m People Without Electricity — REA

Nigeria's Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Managing Director, Engr Abba Aliyu, revealed that the country has the highest number of people without access to electricity in the world, with an estimated 90 million citizens still living in darkness. The federal government is actively working with the private sector to close this energy gap, with 70 million Nigerians currently enjoying electricity.

Aliyu emphasized the government's commitment to addressing this issue, citing successful projects such as the Alex Ekwueme University and a solar hydro power project in Gombe State. The REA is also focusing on expanding renewable energy sources, including solar, biomass, and wind power.

Aliyu highlighted the agency's approach of incentivizing the private sector to deliver commercially viable infrastructure, ensuring sustainability and lasting access to electricity, especially in rural and underserved areas. He promised to release verifiable data on the agency's achievements to back up their efforts.
