Varsities Now Powered With Solar Mini-Grids, Says REA Boss

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Engr Abba Aliyu, announced the successful completion of a solar power project in eight Nigerian universities as part of a public sector solarisation initiative. In an interview with Channels Television Morning Brief, Aliyu revealed that the project was completed within six months, with four universities in Yola, Dutsinma, Katsina, Lokoja, Owerri, and Imo undergoing technical testing.

The Federal Executive Council has approved the next phase of the university electrification project, which will cover prominent institutions like the University of Lagos, University of Benin, and Obafemi Awolowo University. Additionally, the REA has exceeded its target of delivering 60 interconnected solar mini-grids in rural areas, currently reaching 91 installations in states like Osun, Plateau, Cross River, and Niger.

Aliyu emphasized the agency's commitment to providing electricity solutions and surpassing expectations set by the government.
