REA, Delta Partner on Off-grid Power, Plan to Raise State’s GDP By $2.9bn

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Delta State government have partnered to deploy off-grid power in 471 unserved communities, aiming to boost the state's GDP by $2.9 billion and create jobs. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two entities highlights the potential of renewable energy, particularly solar power, in the region with high solar radiance levels.

Despite existing rural electrification efforts, many communities still lack access to electricity, hindering economic growth and development. The collaboration seeks to leverage renewable energy to drive improvements in healthcare, education, local industry, and job creation.

The state government is committed to implementing the energy access initiative to align with its development agenda and attract investments. The REA has identified educational facilities and communities for electricity connection, emphasizing the cost-effectiveness and benefits of renewable energy over traditional sources.

Through the deployment of solar home systems, the REA aims to address electricity access challenges and boost economic growth in Delta State.
