Nigeria identifies 53 Ebola contacts as government establishes treatment centres

Federal authorities have traced 53 people linked to a confirmed Ebola case and are preparing isolation facilities across states with international entry points.

Fifty-three individuals have been identified through contact tracing connected to Nigeria's confirmed Ebola case, prompting the country to strengthen its disease containment framework. The 42-year-old woman who is the index case will be medically evacuated for treatment outside Nigeria.

States designated as ports of entry will see the establishment and equipping of treatment facilities under Federal Government plans. Structural reviews of medical institutions form a cornerstone of capacity-building efforts.

The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital is undergoing assessment for isolation readiness. Karu General Hospital will have infection prevention measures evaluated as Nigeria seeks to expand its ability to manage this virus.

Border screening protocols have been substantially reinforced following the outbreak. Lagos airport has strengthened its screening procedures, reflecting Nigeria's commitment to rigorous aviation-related controls.

Resources are being concentrated by Federal teams in states serving as international entry points, extending surveillance coverage beyond conventional transport corridors. Authorities are pursuing a comprehensive approach linking urgent patient care to long-term infrastructure development.

Treatment centres positioned across key states beforehand aim to avert healthcare strain should additional confirmed cases emerge. Transferring the affected patient overseas highlights existing shortfalls in Nigeria's current capacity for managing severe Ebola infections.

However, parallel initiatives to develop local infrastructure remain underway.
