Nigeria Launches First Cataract Surgery Simulation Centre

Nigeria has inaugurated its first cataract surgery simulation centre at the Eleta Eye Institute in Ibadan, marking a significant advancement in the fight against avoidable blindness. The ceremony, attended by stakeholders in the eye health sector, was described by Dr.

Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, Oyo State Commissioner for Health, as a major boost for ophthalmic training in Nigeria. Dr.

Gboyega Ajayi, Chief Executive Officer of Eleta Eye Institute, stated that the simulation-based facility will transform cataract surgery training, allowing ophthalmologists to acquire surgical skills in a risk-free environment. This initiative aims to improve surgical outcomes and reduce risks associated with cataract surgeries.

Dr. Ajayi emphasized that enhanced surgical skills will encourage patients to seek early treatment for eye diseases, including glaucoma.

Dr. Olufemi Awobodu Alabi, Chief Medical Director of Eleta Eye Institute, noted that the centre reflects the institute's commitment to innovation and excellence in patient safety.

The centre is expected to significantly enhance ophthalmic training and access to safe cataract surgeries across Nigeria.
