Free Cataract Surgeries Restore Sight for 100 Patients

The Healthi Smart Children Foundation (HSCF) conducted a significant health initiative in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, offering free cataract surgeries to 100 indigent patients. This project, termed "God's Gift of Sight," is one of the largest community-based eye health interventions in the area.

The initiative included comprehensive eye care services, with approximately 4,000 residents receiving free eye screenings. During this outreach, about 2,500 individuals were diagnosed with presbyopia and other refractive conditions, leading to the provision of free reading glasses and medical treatment for various eye ailments.

The surgeries were performed over four consecutive weekends at the Hope Hospital in Afikpo by a multidisciplinary team, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, and volunteers. Mr.

Fredrick Oko Otu, project manager, emphasized the importance of community partnerships in achieving these health outcomes. Dr.

Christian Oko, the foundation's executive director, praised the team's commitment to expanding healthcare access. The project aims to reduce blindness, which accounts for approximately 43% of cases in Nigeria.
