Nigeria Launches Global Campaign for Agritourism Day

Nigeria has taken a significant step in promoting agritourism by launching an international advocacy campaign for World Agritourism Day. This initiative was unveiled during a press conference in Abuja, led by Henri Ogboi, President of the World Agritourism Organization (WAO).

The campaign aims to address critical issues such as food insecurity, climate change, youth unemployment, and rural poverty. It marks the beginning of a global consultation process ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled for September 2026.

Ogboi proposed formal recognition of World Agritourism Day, to be observed annually on May 16, which would serve as a global platform to promote agricultural tourism and encourage investment. The 2027 advocacy theme will focus on smart climate agritourism for sustainable development.

The WAO aims to establish a global agritourism standard and framework to enhance cooperation among international agencies, emphasizing agritourism's potential to contribute to national and global security, create job opportunities, and improve rural livelihoods.
