Nigeria Advocates UN Recognition of World Agritourism Day

Nigeria is pushing for the United Nations to officially recognize May 16 as World Agritourism Day during a summit held in Abuja on May 15, 2026. The event, attended by diplomats and government officials, aimed to advance the establishment of the World Agritourism Organization (UNWAO).

Henri Ogboi, President of UNWAO, emphasized Nigeria's leadership in agritourism development, calling on member states to adopt May 16 as the official date. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu highlighted the importance of agritourism in enhancing food security and attracting global investment.

The summit also featured discussions on partnerships with countries like Burundi, India, and Ghana, focusing on agricultural transformation and food sufficiency. The event drew representatives from various sectors, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority, to promote agritourism as a strategy for economic development and cultural preservation.
