Experts Call for Fortification of Bouillon Cubes in Nigeria

Health experts in Nigeria are raising alarms over "hidden hunger," which is leading to significant economic losses and health issues due to deficiencies in folate and vitamin B12. They are advocating for the federal government to enforce the fortification of bouillon cubes with these essential nutrients.

This initiative aims to address the high incidence of neural tube defects, with approximately 11,000 infants affected annually, linked directly to folate deficiency. Studies indicate that adequate folic acid intake before conception and during early pregnancy can reduce the risk of these defects by up to 70%.

The call for mandatory fortification is driven by the fact that bouillon cubes are a staple in Nigerian households, making them an effective vehicle for delivering essential nutrients. Dr.
