Experts Call for Fortification of Bouillon Cubes in Nigeria

They are advocating for the federal government to enforce the fortification of bouillon cubes with these essential nutrients.

This initiative aims to address the high incidence of neural tube defects, with approximately 11,000 infants affected annually, linked directly to folate deficiency. Studies indicate that adequate folic acid intake before conception and during early pregnancy can reduce the risk of these defects by up to 70%.

The call for mandatory fortification is driven by the fact that bouillon cubes are a staple in Nigerian households, making them an effective vehicle for delivering essential nutrients. Dr. Jamila Lawal, a nutritionist and public health expert, supports this approach, emphasizing that it could significantly improve public health and economic productivity by addressing the nutritional gaps that affect the workforce and future generations.
