Nigeria Mourns Diplomat Mohammed Mahmud Lele at 50

Mohammed Mahmud Lele, a distinguished Nigerian diplomat, passed away at the age of 50 in Türkiye on April 19, 2026, following a prolonged illness. At the time of his death, he was serving as the Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Just a week prior, he had been appointed as Ambassador-designate to Algeria, with his nomination approved by President Bola Tinubu and subsequently confirmed by the Nigerian Senate. Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele graduated in Economics from Bayero University, Kano, and joined Nigeria's foreign service in 2001.

He was known for his diligent professionalism and strategic thinking, significantly shaping Nigeria's engagement with Middle Eastern countries. His passing is regarded as a major loss to the Ministry and the broader diplomatic corps.

He will be laid to rest on April 22 in Kano, in accordance with Islamic rites. The Ministry has extended condolences to his family and the people of Bauchi State.
