Nigeria and Turkey Strengthen Bilateral Agreements

Nigeria is moving forward to implement agreements with Turkey, as reiterated by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, during a courtesy visit from the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroi, in Abuja. This initiative follows President Bola Tinubu's official visit to Ankara on January 27, 2026, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

The Nigerian delegation included six ministers and resulted in several key bilateral agreements, including cooperation in education and a memorandum of understanding for military cooperation. Ojukwu emphasized the need for effective implementation of these agreements to benefit citizens and enhance bilateral relations.

The discussions also highlighted the goal of achieving a $5 billion bilateral trade target, with current trade volume approaching $2 billion. The joint economic trade committee is designed to address trade barriers and strengthen private sector participation, particularly in Nigeria's energy and agriculture sectors, leveraging Turkish expertise in halal quality standards.
